Black Friday: The Abominable Iron Sloth arises
Friday, January 9th, 2009 | musiX
The story of The Abominable Iron Sloth might rival the tale of the mythical beast conceptualized by the band’s frontman Justin Godfrey.
According to legend the giant sloth was swallowed by an avalanche at the dawn of the first Ice Age, only to be uncovered 10,000 years later by a small village, which ultimately meets its doom at the hands of the behemoth. Godfrey started The Abominable Iron Sloth in Chico, Calif. in 2004. Over the next two years he created a monster so to speak, turning the Iron Sloth into one of the slowest, heaviest and grindiest bands in the Western United States, and putting out his self-titled debut on Canadian label Goodfellow Records. But revolving lineups turned the subsequent UK tour into a disaster. Godfrey, who had recently married, called it a day and moved to Vancouver in 2006.
But there’s been a sighting. The Sloth appears to have crawled from its icy grave, not without enduring some scrapes. Godfrey writes on the band’s MySpace page: “I signed with Black Market Activities and my marriage ended so I figured I had nothing better to do than get the band started up again.”
The band posted a new song “Slugs in a Salt Circle” on their MySpace to tide people over. The current incarnation of Iron Sloth consists of Godfrey and drummer Andre (no last name)—the duo is touring the country and will end up in Portland at Plan B on March 16 (the band will also play Plan B on Feb. 7).
Godfrey continues: “If we survive that we will record a full-length CD when we get back. Things are looking good.”
