Gawd bless the Untied States

There are a lot of math-y, post rock bands out there that are so interested in wowing you with how flexible their fingers are, or how many stop-on-a-dime changes and odd-time signatures they can pack into one song that it becomes an unruly and long-winded mess … kinda like this sentence.

Of course, a lot of people are into that sort of thing, and there’s nothing wrong with that. To me it has as much soul as a stick. Atlanta’s Untied States (watch that “t” and “i” very closely) have gotten unfairly lumped with such bands. Untied States does know its way around an algebraic musical passage or two … or 2a + 4ab + 5a (b + c), but they also appear to be familiar with good ol’-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll (hear “Holding Up Walls”). Sassy dynamics are used for good. Evil lurks around every corner. And this is probably the first time the word “sassy” has been used to describe their music.

Untied States’ latest platter Instant Everything, Constant Nothing was released back in October in Europe and is now hitting the United States (watch that “t” and “i” closely) via Parisian label Distile Records. Sure to both agitate and delight—take lots of drugs.
