It’s a Sonny day
Friday, June 18th, 2010 | musiX
Well, not really. It’s actually mid-June and still raining here in Portland. Fine by me. I like drizzly, overcast days and a perma-pasty complexion … that’s why I eat vitamin D from a Pez dispenser.
But it feels sunny since I started listening to Sonny & the Sunsets. Fronted by Sonny Smith, the San Fran clan (which also includes Kelley Stoltz) is making … well, sunny pop tunes that, according to them, “spark recollections of doo wop’s otherworldly despair, the kitchen sink savoirfaire of The Raincoats, a dose of goofball humor from the Michael Hurley school, and positive possibilities exuded by Jonathan Richman, with and without The Modern Lovers.” They had me at kitchen sink.
It’s good, clean, off-kilter fun. Sonny & the Sunsets released Tomorrow is Alright in 2009, and just released a 7-inch called Hypnotist, which spawned “Stranded,” a lazy summer jam that is just waiting for a sunny day to cozy up to. And “Too Young to Burn” has hand claps. I suggest you give these spawn a spin.
