Now You Can Win: The TDoL Thermals Contest
Monday, March 16th, 2009 | musiX
I’ve made a damned fool of myself with how often I’ve mentioned The Thermals in this space. I will not apologize. Only a few weeks to go until the release of The Thermals’ new record Now We Can See (out April 7 on Kill Rock Stars).
To help celebrate the event The Days of Lore, in conjunction with the fine folks at InSound, is holding its first-ever contest called—Now You Can Win: The TDoL Thermals Contest. The winner will receive a very snazzy Thermals T-shirt, which can be viewed right … here. The winner also gets a free download of the new record. Is there any way I can enter my own contest? I’m being told that I cannot. OK then.
All you have to do is write your favorite Thermals lyric in the comments section of this post and provide your name and e-mail address. Also, if you’re on Twitter—and I know you are—Tweet your pals about the contest … Tweet, Tweet! Deadline for entries is midnight (PDT), Monday, March 30. The winner will be announced that same week on Friday, April 3, and the loot will be sent right to your door. Total retail value of this package: PRICELESS.

“I believe, I believe
I could see, I could see
forever in my hand”
Those lines always get stuck in my head :p
“Here’s your future: It’s gonna rain.”

“His son said, ‘I will but Dad, I’m afraid’”
from “Here’s Your Future”

“So pull out your dead roots, pull out your best suit, you know the one they’re going to bury you in!”
From an Ear for Baby.
Either that or just the all out ridiculousness of every single line of Everything Thermals from the No Culture Icons EP.
Best line I’ve heard from the new album so far;
“Fear was mine, fear was by my side, it kept me well, hell, it kept me alive. I counted days as they faded away - I only felt safe when I was afraid.”
From “When I Was Afraid.” Took me a while to find the demo track of that. Thankfully some magazine had it in their archives.
Hutch Harris is easily one of my favorite lyricists of the decade and I’m super excited to see their Madison gig. Should be great.
yeah, you open your eyes
and stare into mine
a stare like yours
is hard to find
it’s ultraviolet
you close your eyes
and breathe
i feel your lips
you hit the switch!
i once screenprinted a thermals tote bag for myself when i was in college. i thought i couldn’t actually use it once i moved to portland…

Scratch what I said before - I changed my mind - as I’ve done a billion times before. Because, really, it’s kind of impossible to pick a favorite - but I think I’m going to go WITH;
“Fear was mine, fear was by my side, it kept me well, hell, it kept me alive. I counted days as they faded away - I only felt safe when I was afraid.”
Because I honestly can’t tell if he’s saying “I only felt safe” or, “I only felt sane” - I’m betting on safe.
Either way - It’s one of their catchiest choruses and holds a meaning that not only connects to their previous works but also aims at bigger things more successfully, I think, than any band has come close to recently.
This may change in a few days though.
Never know.
But I’m cementing this as my last post.

Third option for what he could be saying; I only felt SAVED.
All three work miraculously. Making it a great live song to Dylanize in changing one lyric to slightly alter the meaning or have it point more directly to something.
So, yes, that is my favorite.
Thanks for doing this!
Glad to see people love The Thermals as much as me.
