Love Is For the Rich

I’m just going to put this out there before I continue: 99.751 percent of the bands on Tooth & Nail Records make me want to listen to Slayer while sitting in the middle of a pentagram painted in goat’s blood on my bedroom floor. This is why. But …

… I like Surrogate. Which means … borrow the one … they make up the remaining 0.249 percent.

Vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Chris Keene started the Chico, Calif. band with drummer and fellow former Number One Gun member Jordan Mallory. They released Love Is For the Rich in 2007, two years after Keene had left behind his hired-gun status and began writing his own songs. They’re good—jangly and unapologetically poppy—and I hope they get the chance they deserve.

Surrogate—whose performing roster includes Daniel Martin (keys, xylophone) and Daniel Taylor (bass, green sneakers)—just released its second record Popular Mechanics, another collection of songs that is light years away from anything on the Tooth & Nail roster. Which is a good thing for me. Goat’s blood is very difficult to get out of carpets.
