Nevergreens Vol. 2

Footloose and Los Fancy Free

Martin Thulin is the blond, rail-thin mastermind behind Mexico City’s Los Fancy Free. The band plays a hybrid of ’60s psychedelic that allows plenty of modern elements to creep in—picture Los Dug Dug’s having a threesome with Depeche Mode and David Bowie … believe me, it’s sexy … even for all you squares who don’t like three-ways.

Thulin doesn’t look like the frontman for a rock band from Mexico. He was actually born in a Scandinavian Mennonite community in Northern Mexico and at a young age moved to Sweden with his Mennonite hippie parents, who couldn’t relate to the group’s ideas. Thulin (who also goes by Menonita Rock) moved back to Mexico’s capital 15 years ago and began dabbling with Los Fancy Free in the late ’90s.

The band has released a handful of albums, including its latest Nevergreens Vol. 1 and Nevergreens Vol. 2. This might officially be my favorite release of this waning year, beautifully recorded psych-punk with giddy choruses. Gives me chills … where’s Vol. 3 already?! Come on!

All right, I guess I’ll have to stick with this pair. Vol. 2 is a little more raucous, and includes a raw and rawkin’ nine-minute version of “Sultans of Swing.” It kills. But, it is this nugget (translation: “Cloud of Love”), sung in Spanish, that has been getting the repeated plays. Give it a spin. It’ll make you loco with craziness!
