Spain
Ain’t no Montañas high enough

I lived in San Sebastián, Spain in 2003, and the music there typically fell into two categories—metal and techno … I also heard a disturbing number of Bon Jovi songs set to techno beats (Spain loves Bon Jovi like Germany loves David Hasselhoff). Essentially, you have to put in some serious work to find good music. Though I guess it’s like that in the States, or anywhere for that matter.
When I recently stumbled on to Northern Spain’s Montañas it was as if I had struck gold. This band is good. The trio plays lo-fi garage rock that has fleeting moments of delicacy. Guitars are loud and bright, and the drums sound like someone rapping sticks on leather seat cushions. Montañas’ latest self-titled 10-inch (that’s 10-inch vinyl, on Gramaciones Grabofónicas) is a beaut, and you can download the entire thing for free right here. Pay special attention to “La Barra” (the hand claps!) and “Yo Conduzco, Ella Me Guía.” There—el trabajo es completo.

Country first, then the galaxy!

After Sarah Palin folked Americans right in their ears during the vice-presidential debate, who gives a rat’s ass what happened between Maverick John McCain (left) and Sen. Barack Obama, right?
I won’t waste space (i.e., your time) giving my pedestrian analysis on last night’s debate. You all know what happened … a whole lotta nothing. Issues aside: The thought of four years with a 72-year-old white-haired white guy and a pretty, four-eyed puppet that has the Republican arm deep inside of her manipulating her mouth, working overtime on the wink control (Jim Henson would be proud) frightens me.
McCain’s motto is “Country First.” Obama, “Change.” I have one myself: “Vote McCain, I’m off to Spain.” I will be poor. And I’ll live off of bocadillos and txacoli. And it will be perfect.
