Delivering The Package

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011 | musiX | No Comments

If you haven’t heard Severance Package, it’s about time you did. Now. The trio from Chico, Cali just released the video for “All Down Hill” from their 7-inch of the same name. The clip—directed by the band’s bassist/voxist Robin Indar—tosses a rapid succession of images that all seem to point toward the ills of mankind. It’s not pretty, but it sure is fun to look at.

Severance Package is the natural progression from the members’ previous bands Black Fork and Lott Lyzzyrd—dig the punk rawk spaz and lo-fi slop! They’re definitely the weird little growth on that uni town’s porcelain complexion. The band just released another split 7-inch with Bay Area duo Street Eaters, and are putting the finishing touches on their first long-player due out this summer on Portland’s Shut Up Records Berkeley’s Mess Me Up Records.

Eternal Tapestry: The Final Frontier

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 | musiX, pdX | No Comments

Eternal Tapestry’s neo-space psych is the perfect backdrop to this old sci-fi movie clip of the B variety. Or is it that this old sci-fi movie of the B variety is the perfect backdrop for Eternal Tapestry’s neo-space psych? I just can’t wrap my mind around it because I’m tripping so hard.

The clip for the Portland five-piece’s “Galactic Derelict” (the first single from their forthcoming Thrill Jockey debut, Beyond the 4th Door) was directed by longtime friend of TDoL Mike Sargent, who moonlights as DJ Ratrace on his bi-weekly radio show Los Ensemble Economique on Humboldt State’s KHSU FM. Let’s just say this is a match made in the heavens.

Purple Rhinestone Eagle en public en France

Monday, October 11th, 2010 | musiX, pdX | No Comments

The three women of Purple Rhinestone Eagle don’t get nearly the amount of ink they deserve. PRE is a steam (rock ‘n’) rolling machine. And while their latest LP The Great Return includes plenty of sludge-caked riffery, there are some incredible spacey moments (resin-caked spliffery?) like on “Scorpio Moon” (see below). Live, the band is simply jaw-dropping (again, see below). And check out the TDoL interview with PRE from last year.

Purple Rhinestone Eagle just returned home to Portland from a tour of Europe, and with them brought some video documentation of what looked like a ripping show in southern France. Note that there is not a single folded arm among the audience members.

Broken Bells vid is a sexy beast

Monday, June 7th, 2010 | musiX | No Comments

The newish (ancient in blog years) album from Broken Bells has been a fun, somewhat brief listen here at TDoL HQ. I do like “The Ghost Inside” (the handclaps!) … even though it sounds like a Gorillaz song. Read my two cents on the record here.

The sexy, new, big-production video (again, ancient in blog years) features what’s-her-name from Mad Men, which should get every red-blooded male in the world excited. I know I’m excited. Can’t you tell I’m excited?

Spoon me ni esrever

Monday, February 8th, 2010 | musiX | No Comments

It’s funny, I used to lump Spoon in with bands like the Gin Blossoms … I don’t think anyone wants to be lumped in with the Gin Blossoms. My apologies, Mr. Daniel.

I put Britt Daniel more in the Jeff Tweedy school of making music that is beautiful and sometimes a little weird and cranky. Take the first single off the band’s latest Transference. “Written In Reverse” is sweet and spastic, and the video is in black and white and features a large mirror. And you know what? .smossolB niG eht ekil gnihton sdnuos tI
